Deadly Shootings In Gary

GARY, Ind. (CBS) -- Three people were killed and four others were shot during two separate shootings overnight in Gary, Ind.

CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli reports, evidence markers dotted the area where detectives found bullet casings after multiple shots were fired outside a home near 29th Street and Colfax.

Police saturated the area interviewing possible witnesses and searching for evidence.

The Lake County Medical Examiner's Office said Rolando Correa, 22, of Gary, died from a gunshot wound.

His death was ruled a homicide.

WBBM Newsadio's Bernie Tafoya reports that police have one person in custody and another person of interest is being questioned.

Gary Police Chief Wade Ingram said, shortly before midnight, at least two men forced their way into the home in the 6200 block of 29th Avenue and shot two of the men inside.

A man who said he owned both homes where the first incident took place says the two brothers who live in the houses put up a fight with the home invaders and that one of the brothers was able to turn a suspect's gun on himself, wounding the suspect. Both brothers were also wounded.

The purported property owner says the home invaders had told the residents they were the police and "where's the weed?" The property owner says he's a minister and makes sure there's no drugs on his property.

He called the two brothers "heroes" for saving their own lives but also the lives of the man's daughter and his grandchild.

In the second shooting, Cpl. Gabrielle King with the Gary Police Department said a woman and her boyfriend were shot inside their van around 3:30 a.m. at 21st and Virginia.

The woman was in the minivan with her boyfriend and another man--when that man fatally shot her boyfriend and then shot her in the neck.

The dead man has not been identified.

She managed to flee the vehicle and was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Police are looking for a 1999 white Chrysler minivan with the Indiana license plate 0FP293

In a separate incident, the body of another shooting victim was found at 32nd and Georgia.
