Police Rescue 6 After Boat Sinks Near Navy Pier
UPDATED 07/05/12 6:31 a.m.
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago Police say a boat going too fast Wednesday afternoon caused a smaller boat to sink just south of Navy Pier.
As WBBM Newsradio's Steve Miller reports, just east of the Chicago River locks, a 17 1/2-foot bass boat went down around 5:20 p.m. Wednesday. Six people ended up in the water.
Chicago Police Marine Unit Officer Michael Michalik says it was a larger boat that caused it all.
"The boat was swamped," Michalik asid. "A larger boat went by at a high speed, and the wake from that boat swamped their boat. And because it's a small bass boat, it's all open and the wake went over their bow and it caused their boat to sink."
Officer Michalik says the four men and two women on the bass boat were wearing life vests when they were pulled out of the lake - and he says they were all safe when they were rescued.
No one had to be hospitalized.
