Simon Wants High Schools To Require More Math

Simon learned there was a problem while touring all the state's community colleges. She found only half of the students were ready for college level math.

Simon says three years of math are required to graduate from Illinois high schools and many seniors take advantage.
"A year's math vacation is not a good way to stay up on your skills," she says. "One of the things we can do is do a better job of providing information, and look at whether we want to require that fourth year of math."
Simon says the state's high schools must do a better job to prepare or train their students before graduating. For example, she says trigonometry is required in manufacturing jobs, yet is not required in high school.
