Shots Fired At Car In Downtown Skokie During Afternoon Rush
SKOKIE (CBS) -- A man pulled a gun and shot up a car in downtown Skokie during rush hour Thursday night, a few feet from the new Oakton Street CTA station.
As WBBM Newsradio's Bob Roberts reports, the proximity of the shooting to the CTA Yellow Line prompted transit officials to suspend service on the line for more than half an hour.
No one was hurt when the shots were fired on Oakton Street just west of Skokie Boulevard.
Eyewitnesses told police that the man fired multiple shots using a semi-automatic pistol, striking the westbound auto, which stopped a short distance away. The gunman tried to escape on foot but was cornered by Skokie police officers a short time later.
Police said the initial investigation shows that the dispute may have been domestic in nature.
The shooting attempt occurred at 5:05 p.m. Service was halted within minutes on the Yellow Line and reinstated about 5:40 p.m., according to Chicago Transit Authority spokesman Steve Mayberry.
Service on the 97/Skokie bus – which runs parallel to the Yellow Line – was temporarily increased to handle the delayed commuters.
