No One Injured After Police-Involved Shootout In Humboldt Park
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The hunt is still on for the shooter or shooters who took aim at Chicago police offers working the West Side on Friday morning.
Chicago Police Area Four Deputy Chief Ernest Cato said, around 7:40 a.m., officers were conducting a drug investigation in the 700 block of North Trumbull Avenue, when someone fired several shots at police.
Officers returned fire, but Cato said no one was wounded in the shootout.
One "person of interest" was in being questioned, but police said it was not the shooter.
Police were still searching for the shooter or shooters Friday afternoon.
Cato said the incident is just an example of the danger people in the neighborhood face from illegal drug activity on the West Side.
"People are concerned every day in this neighborhood, and this is the testimony of what goes on here non-stop, when someone has the tenacity to fire down a street at individuals," Cato said. "I don't think anyone in this neighborhood feels safe until we come to a solution by bringing multiple organizations and community and police and everyone together."
Several SWAT officers and at least one armored vehicle remained on the scene for several hours after the shootout, and SWAT officers could be seen going into and out of at least one home on the block, although it was not immediately clear how the home was connected to the incident. The scene has since been cleared.
Police said the incident remains under investigation.
