Shoppers To Swarm Stores This Weekend On 'Super Saturday'
(CBS) -- With one week to go until Christmas, we now face the biggest shopping day of the year: Super Saturday.
CBS 2's Dorothy Tucker reports what makes this weekend so special.
Super Saturday is usually the third-best shopping day in the holiday season, behind Black Friday and Thanksgiving Thursday. But this year it's taking the top spot, because of timing.
A late start for Taheisha King means she'll be back at the stores this weekend, contributing to the $10 billion consumers are expected to spend the last Saturday before Christmas. That tops the 9.1 billion they spent Black Friday.
Bill Martin, founder of Shoppertrak, says Black Friday has been "diminished a little bit" by stores opening up on Thanksgiving. Plus, this year, the coming Saturday is a favorable calendar position. It's five days before Christmas
That means more time for consumers to shop, and Martin says while there will be plenty of deals, the deepest discounts will be on inventory retailers are trying to push.
"Anything winter-related—hats, gloves, scarves, sweater, any technology that didn't catch the eye of the consumer," Martin says.
Stores like Walmart are gearing up for the Super Saturday rush.
But there, too, the best deals are tailored, a representative says.
Super Saturday also marks the beginning of the extended hours. Many retailers will be open from early in the morning until midnight, and some will be open 24 hours.
