Shoplifting Suspect Slashes Own Throat
OAK PARK (CBS) -- A man stopped for questioning by police Monday afternoon during a theft investigation slashed his own neck with a broken bottle in west suburban Oak Park.
The unidentified man was taken by ambulance to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, with what Oak Park police called "significant but non-life-threatening injuries."
Cmdr. Ladon Reynolds said an officer responding to a retail theft at the Jewel grocery at 7036 Roosevelt Rd. spotted a man running in the vicinity of the 1100 block of Home Avenue around 2:30 p.m.
Reynolds said the man threw what appeared to be proceeds from the theft to the ground and ran into an alley between the 1100 blocks of South Wenonah Avenue and South Home Avenue.
There he attempted to hide in a garbage can. But when confronted by police, Reynolds said, the man repeatedly refused to drop the broken bottle he was holding, then slashed his own neck.
Reynolds said the man is considered "a person of interest" in their investigation.
