Shooting On Dan Ryan Expressway Leaves Three Wounded
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Three people were wounded in a shooting on the Dan Ryan Expressway overnight.
Illinois State Police shut down the outbound local lanes of the expressway for more than three hours after someone drove up next to another vehicle, and fired several shots near 57th Street around 1:10 a.m.
At least three people were wounded. The driver took them to St. Bernard Hospital, where they were treated for their injuries. None of the injuries was considered life-threatening.
A 20-year-old man, who identified himself only as a hip hop artist named Logan, was grazed by a bullet. He would not comment on the incident, or what led up to it, but said he was thankful his injuries were not more serious.
"I got shot in the back of the head. It was just a graze," he said. "I'm still fresh off it, so it's still surreal right now, but I'll probably have headaches and stuff for the next couple of days."
His mother, who identified herself only as Kim, said it was very scary to learn her son had been shot.
"I went ballistic, and just got here to the hospital to be by his side, and thank God that my grandmother was watching him, because he's very lucky to be alive," she said.
Logan said he's bothered by unnecessary violence.
"In Chicago, it's like culture to be used to stuff like this, so I just want it to stop," he said.
Illinois State Police were investigating, but have not said if the shooting was targeted or random.
All local lanes of the outbound Dan Ryan reopened by about 4:25 a.m.
Illinois State Police said it was the fourth shooting on the Dan Ryan this year. Last year, there were 19 shootings on Chicago expressways, including seven on the Dan Ryan.
Last month, after an argument downtown, a man followed a couple south on the Dan Ryan, and fired several shots into their car on the ramp connecting the Dan Ryan to the Bishop Ford Freeway. A 26-year-old man was wounded.
On May 7, someone fired shots in the northbound lanes of the Dan Ryan near 31st Street, hitting an ambulance transporting a patient, and a second vehicle. No one was injured in that shooting.
Early Monday, a man in his 20s was wounded when someone fired shots into his Chevy Suburban while he was driving on the Dan Ryan near 31st Street.
