And in the hours right before New Year's Eve, a 14-year-old boy was shot as he sat in a car.

Over the weekend, a 2-year-old girl was shot in the head -- an accidental shooting, as she played with other children, Gary Police Corporal Gabrielle King said.

"To be honest with you, I've been in law enforcement almost 27 years," King said. "And just thinking back, I can't remember it ever being that many in that short of a time span."

King says the girl was shot with a handgun that had been left out - sitting under a television in the room where the children were playing.
