Shooting Kills Fetus, Mom In Critical Condition

(STMW) -- A pregnant woman who was shot in the abdomen Monday night has lost her baby and is in critical condition at an area hospital, police said Tuesday.

The 18-year-old Homer Glen woman was shot around 7 p.m. Monday in the 200 block of Fairmont in Lockport Township, Will County police said. The Will County Coroner is investigating the death of her male fetus, which was pronounced dead at 8:41 p.m. Monday night at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet.

Her boyfriend, also 18, a former Lockport resident, was shot in the leg in the incident, and was treated at the hospital and released, police said.

The couple are both former students of Lockport Township High School, with the boyfriend now living in Steger, police said.

On Monday night, the couple was in a vehicle when the vehicle was approached by several male subjects. Those subjects fired several shots at the vehicle, police said.

The couple drove toward State Street in the vehicle and called 911.

The Lockport Police Department initially responded, and the victims were transported to an area hospital by the Lockport Township Fire Protection District. Will County sheriff's detectives continue to investigate the incident, police said Tuesday.
