Sexual Assault Charges For Peapod Delivery Driver
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Peapod grocery delivery driver is due in court Tuesday, on new felony charges alleging that he sexually assaulted a customer in her South Loop home.
Guillermo Balingit, 36, of the 6000 block of West Byron Street, was originally charged only with one count of misdemeanor battery in the incident, which happened at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in the 1100 block of South Michigan Avenue.
But on Monday, Balingit was charged with criminal sexual assault in connection to the incident. Police have not disclosed why the charges were upgraded.
He is set to appear for a bond hearing Tuesday.
A written statement released the day after the incident said the victim was a customer and the man accused was one of their drivers.
"Peapod considers the safety of its customers to be one of its top priorities. We conduct criminal background checks of all drivers before they are hired by Peapod, which are updated periodically," the statement said. "We are taking this matter very seriously and continue to cooperate with law enforcement authorities."
