Severe Storms Moving In To Chicago Area Tuesday Night
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Severe storms are expected to hit the Chicago area Tuesday night, and could produce large hail and damaging winds.
While any severe weather should not arrive until after the evening rush, some isolated thunderstorms could pop up earlier in the afternoon and evening.
Organized storms moving in from Iowa were expected to reach the western suburbs around 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. For most of the Chicago area, the greatest chance for storms is between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. For areas west of Aurora, the threat will last from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. For northwest Indiana, the threat will be from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.
The main risks from Tuesday night's storms will be the potential for lightning, large hail, and damaging winds. There isn't much of a threat of tornados, although the possibility can't be ruled out.
After the storm passes through, very windy conditions were expected on Wednesday.
The National Weather Service has issued a high wind watch from Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening, as gusts of up to 50 mph are expected, and gusts of 60 mph or more are possible. Such strong winds can cause property damage and make driving difficult.
The rest of the week is expected to be calm, but cool. While temperatures on Tuesday will reach the low to mid 60s, Wednesday and Thursday will see highs in the low to mid 50s. Then, from Friday through early next week, highs will reach only the mid 40s. Saturday also brings another chance for rain for the Chicago area.
