Serial Mugger On The Loose On Near Northwest Side
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A serial mugger is on the loose on the city's Near Northwest Side, targeting women in the trendy Wicker Park and Logan Square neighborhoods.
As CBS 2's Susanna Song reports, there have been at least eight muggings since December, and police believe it is the same man attacking the women.
Police say the suspect approaches his victims on the sidewalk and steals their purses, money and cell phones.
A community alert was sent out on Thursday night, warning women to be on the lookout. The alert said the strong-arm robberies happened at the following times and locations:
--At 5:20 a.m. Dec. 4 in the 3100 block of West Fullerton Avenue;
--At 6 a.m. Dec. 17 in the 1800 block of North California Avenue;
--At 3 a.m. this past Tuesday in the 1500 block of North Hoyne Avenue;
--At 4 p.m. this past Wednesday in the 1700 block of West Wabansia Avenue.
The suspect has been described as a black man between the ages of 18 and 39, standing 5 feet 8 to 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighing 150 to 180 pounds.
In two of the attacks, the robber was described as having dreadlocks, and he has been described as wearing a gray or brown hooded sweatshirt, or a black puffy coat.
Police are warning women to be careful, not to walk alone, and to hide their belongings.
