Suspect Sought In 10 Chicago Bank Robberies
CHICAGO (CBS) – A lone bandit with no weapon and no disguise has managed to rob 10 Chicago banks in just over a month.
Authorities say it's time to put an end to his career.
In each of the 10 robberies, the man enters the bank wearing a hat or a hoodie. He goes to the teller window, demands cash -- sometimes verbally, sometimes with a note -- grabs the money and takes off.
He has never produced a weapon but implies he has one.
"This robber has been unusual in that he does little to conceal his identity. The result is we've gotten some excellent surveillance photos which clearly identify the same individual in all 10 of these crimes," Joan Hyde of the FBI tells CBS 2's Roseanne Tellez.
The bandit, who is between five-feet, five-inches and six feet tall, is getting plenty of exposure on the FBI's "Bandit Tracker" website. He's in his 20s or 30s.
And he's been doing it an average of once a week, although he once robbed two banks in one day. All 10 robberies since Dec. 13 have occurred on the North Side.
"As the numbers of robberies increase, a lot of times these individuals become more bold and the chance of violence and injuries does increase, so we are interested in getting him off the street," Hyde said.
Once out of the banks, he leaves on foot. No one has seen him hop in a car. But some tips are rolling in. And there will be a reward for the tip that lands him in jail.
