Sentencing Delayed For Deerfield Man Who Killed Ex-Girlfriend's Mom
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A twist in the case of a Deerfield man convicted of murder.
Murder Sentence Delayed
In November, Daniel Baker, 24, was found guilty but mentally ill in the murder of his former girlfriend's mother, Marina Aksman.
Aksman was beaten with a baseball bat on April 1, 2010, in her Vernon Hills home after she tried to break up the pair.
On the eve of his scheduled sentence, Baker has filed his own motion, an eight-page document, titled "Not Guilty."
In it, he claims Askman's daughter, Kristina, who is mentally disabled, committed the murder.
The development prompted Baker's attorney, Ed Genson, to declare Baker is mentally unfit to take part in court proceedings. In past proceedings, Genson has said Baker is very uncooperative.
A hearing on that issue is now set for February, with the sentencing on hold.
