Seniors At High-Rise Offered Shelter During Extended Power Outage
DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. (CBS) – Monday's massive power outage prompted police and fire officials in Downers Grove to make well-being checks at a high-rise for seniors.
Authorities knocked on doors at the 164-unit Oak Tree Towers and offered to temporarily relocate seniors from the building. It had no power -– and, consequently, no lights, elevators or air-conditioning.
"Once we found out from ComEd we were going to be in an extended outage- recovery period, we really wanted to reach out to our senior residents in particular to make sure they were doing OK," village communications director Doug Kozlowski told CBS 2's Kristyn Hartman.
He said a handful of residents chose the option of cooler lodging and electricity. The village transported them to a shelter at Benedictine University.
Helen Jedlin chose to stay, but she was grateful that officials checked on the seniors.
