Semi Driver Struck And Killed By Pickup On I-80/94
GARY, Ind. (STMW) - A semi truck driver was struck and killed as he stood outside his semi Tuesday afternoon on the Borman Expy. in northwest Indiana and a Chicago man was cited for the crash.
About 4 p.m., a semi driver -- whose name is being withheld pending family notification -- was standing outside his semi tractor-box trailer on the outer shoulder on I-80/94 eastbound near the Grant Street exit in Gary, according to an Indiana State Police release.
He had parked on the side of interstate for unknown reasons and was getting ready to get back into his truck when a 1994 Ford Ranger pickup, driven by Darryll A. Bonaparte, 50, of Chicago, drifted over from the right lane, the release said.
The pickup's passenger mirror scraped the side of the semi's trailer, then hit the driver, who was thrown onto the pickup and then to the ground. He was pronounced dead at Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in Gary of head trauma, the release said.
Bonaparte was cited for unsafe lane movement. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
The Borman saw intermittent lane closures until about 6 p.m.
