Selig Pushes For Second Wild Card Playoff Berth
NEW YORK (CBS) -- With the playoff races tending toward the boring this year, Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig is hoping his proposed second wild card playoff berth will be established for next year.
Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan reported Wednesday that Selig's proposed second wild card berth could have dramatically altered the landscape for this year's playoff races. He suggested a half-game separating the Tampa Bay Rays and the Los Angeles Angels in the American League, or a tie between the San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League.
But in reality, there are no compelling playoff races this year, and, as Passan points out, "all the leftover buzz surrounds individual awards" in this dull September for baseball.
Selig tells Yahoo Sports seeking to have the second wild card berth established for next year, but he concedes there are "a whole series of things" that will determine whether it will actually happen.
Collective bargaining talks are the most significant obstacle, and while Passan reports the talks are moving ahead "cordially," issues such as realignment of teams to different divisions remain unresolved.
But almost everyone in the game endorses the second wild card berth, Selig tells Yahoo Sports.
