Selig Has 'No Concerns' Over Cubs' Attendance Drop
CHICAGO (CBS) It's no mystery that the attendance at this season's Chicago Cubs games hasn't been what it usually is, and according to MLB commissioner Bud Selig, that has nothing to do the team's performance or the owners.
"You guys know how bad the weather is," Selig said Thursday at a meeting with Associated Press sports editors in New York. "I left Phoenix Sunday and it was 96. I flew to Milwaukee and I opened the blinds at home the next morning and it was snowing.
"We're only 1.2, 1.3 percent off (average attendance figures). But we've had horrendous weather, especially in the Midwest. I really don't have any concerns."
The Cubs have had particularly bad weather recently. They were forced to postpone Tuesday's game against the San Diego Padres, and the temperatures for the recent home stand have been in the 30s and 40s.
"I know about the attendance at Wrigley and I have every confidence in them," Selig said.
The commissioner also discussed an expended playoff format in 2012 and said he would not change Barry Bonds' records after the former San Francisco Giant was convicted on an obstruction of justice charge last week.
