Security, Risk Management Consultant Helps Clients Make Sound Business Decisions

David Fisher is an independent security and risk management consultant located in Chicago. Most recently, his focus has been on the completion of background investigations of senior money managers on behalf of prospective investors. He retired from the U.S. Secret Service after serving 24 years in a senior leadership role. Prior to joining the Secret Service, Fisher served nine years in the U.S. Air Force as a law enforcement officer and as a special agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. Fisher holds a B.S. in law enforcement/business administration from University of Maryland-University College. David shares his insight and knowledge of security and risk management.

What are the responsibilities of your current role?

"The majority of my consulting work involves the completion of comprehensive background investigations of hedge fund managers, traders, principals and their companies on behalf of institutional-level and high net worth investors. The process is designed to assess risk by determining if there are any adverse reports, history of criminal or civil litigation, or other issues which could adversely impact the investment or present reputation risk to the investors. The process entails a detailed verification of information provided by the subject of the background review, along with the collection of independent records obtained through commercial databases, public records, and specialized research"

What is your favorite part of your daily duties?

"Investors hire me because they want confirmation they are dealing with reputable and ethical business partners. I have always enjoyed these investigations and the challenge of gathering details, synthesizing the information, and presenting the full picture in a comprehensive written report. There is a real sense of satisfaction when I provide clients with a report that helps them make sound business decisions."

Do you feel your education prepared you for your current role?

"My education clearly prepared me for a career in law enforcement and investigations. I joined the Air Force directly out of high school, but always understood the importance of pursuing higher education. The Air Force provided opportunities for me to take college classes through local universities. I attended classes at night and ultimately obtained a bachelor's degree in law enforcement and business administration from the University of Maryland / University College. Attending classes at night, after working full-time during the day, definitely gave me a real appreciation for my education."

Do you have any advice for people who desire to pursue a similar career?

"Any career in law enforcement, investigations, corporate security, or consulting requires effective communications, both oral and written. The best investigators I have known were those who could document their findings in a well written report. A well-rounded education, including the development of good writing skills will serve you well. In addition, I advise young people who are interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement to realize the choices they make as young adults could definitely have an impact in the selection process."
