Search On For Suspect Who Hit Police Officer With Blunt Object

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The search was on Friday morning for a suspect who attacked at Chicago Police officer in the South Chicago neighborhood.
As CBS 2's Susanna Song reports, the officer was hit twice with a metal object as he pursued two suspects who had a weapon near 80th Street and Manistee Avenue around 1 a.m. Friday.
Police say two officers – one a man and the other a woman – were on routine patrol when they saw two men – one with the gun – standing in a garage, the Sun-Times Media Wire reported. The male officer jumped out and started chasing the armed man, while the female officer tried to blockade him with the squad car, the wire reported.
But when the man saw the squad car, he doubled back toward the garage. At that point, the other man came up behind and struck the officer twice in the back with a blunt object, police said.
Police originally believed the object was a baseball bat, but they now tell the wire it might have been a steel pole, possibly a post from a bed frame.
As of 5 a.m., the past few hours, police were still searching for the two suspects, combing the area with flashlights. Police also sent up a helicopter to scour the neighborhood.
Several officers also walked around with flashlights, hoping to find the suspects. They had not been located as of 5 a.m.
The officer was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, but had been released by 5 a.m.
