Police: Man Fled Restaurant Without Paying Before Jumping Into Fox River
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Authorities are searching for a man who jumped into the Fox River on Thursday night after allegedly skipping out on a restaurant tab in northwest suburban Algonquin.
Officers were called about 9:20 p.m. to Nero's Restaurant, 300 Eastgate Court in Algonquin, for reports that a man had run out of the restaurant without paying his tab, according to a statement from Algonquin police. He was seen running toward the Fox River.
A fisherman saw the man leap into the water near Route 62 and North River Road, according to the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District.
Strong currents might have swept the man over a dam near that juncture of the river, fire officials said.
Dive teams searched the area until about midnight to no avail, officials said. They resumed searching about 7:15 a.m. Friday.
Authorities are still trying to identify the man, whom police described as a 160-pound Middle Eastern or Hispanic man about 30 years old and standing about 6 feet tall. He was wearing a blue shirt, blue jean shorts and black shoes.
