Search For Gurnee Robber Put School On Lockdown
GURNEE (CBS) -- A bank was robbed Thursday afternoon in north suburban Gurnee, leading to a soft lock down at three schools in the area as police searched for the suspect.
Police received a report of an armed robbery in progress about 1:45 p.m. at the Community Trust Credit Union branch at 1313 N. Rte. 41, according to a statement from Gurnee police.
The suspect approached a teller implying he had a weapon, but did not display one, police said.
He then jumped on top of the teller counter and took an undisclosed amount of cash before running away.
There were no reported injuries.
Although a police canine unit and a helicopter were used to search the area, the suspect was not found, police said.
"Viking Junior High, Warren Township High School's O'Plaine Campus, and River Trail School were placed on a soft lock down while the search was conducted," police said.
The suspect is described as a 5-foot-10 black man with a medium build, police said. He was wearing a white ski mask, red hooded sweatshirt and jeans.
Although there have been recent robberies in Grandwood Park and other nearby locations, Gurnee Police Commander Willie Meyer said Thursday's robbery was unusual.
"I can't remember the last bank robbery in Gurnee proper," he said.
