Schuster: Upsets Galore At The United Center
Not one but two shocking upsets at the United Center Sunday night. And not only were they upsets but blowouts as well.
In the first game #11 Virginia Commonwealth dominated from start to finish eliminating the 3rd seed, Purdue 94-76. The Rams beat the Boilermakers in every category and on both ends of the court. They had 6 players in double figure scoring, shot 57% for the game and their bench outscored the bench of the Irish 29-5. Purdue did get 25 points and 14 rebounds from JaJuan Johnson but most of those numbers came when he game was well out of hand. So VCU wins their 3rd game in 5 days and for a team that many criticized for even being selected for the tournament, they look awfully good.
Then in the 2nd game it was almost as if the same script was followed as 10th seeded Florida State led through out and eliminated 2nd seeded Notre Dame 71-57. The Seminoles known primarily as a defensive team came out on fire hitting 7 three pointers in the opening half. They led by as many as 22 in the 2nd half before the Irish cut into the margin but never could get any closer. So Notre Dame finishes at 27-7 and goes only one game further then last year's first round disappointment.
