Schuster: Sveum Shot While Hunting With Robin Yount
By: David Schuster
NASHVILLE (CBS) -- When last we saw Dale Sveum, he was just completing a 101-loss season as manager of the Cubs.
At that point, he said he was going home to Arizona to decompress from his rookie campaign. Little did he know that he would soon be the victim of a hunting accident -- a hunting accident that could have been a lot worse.
Quail hunting is a passion for Sveum and his good buddy, Hall of Famer Robin Yount. The two were out one morning, with Sveum walking ahead of his friend when Yount saw a bird, took aim, and unloaded his gun. The problem was that Sveum was also in the path of the buck shot, and caught a few of the pellets -- one in the back and the other in his ear.
"He got the bird but he also got me. It happens more often then you think", said Sveum. "I was 50 yards up on a hill and he lost track of where I was and pulls a trigger. Luckily I was kind of climbing and looking for birds myself and it was behind me and I got drilled with the pellets in the back and one of them stuck in the ear."
And what was Sveum's reaction upon realizing that he was shot? Something we can't print, but you can imagine.
