Schuster: Not Surprised Ventura Turned Down Extension

GLENDALE, Ariz. (CBS) The news that Robin Ventura had turned down a one-year contract extension really didn't surprise insiders.
Rumors dating back to the end of last season were that Ventura still wasn't sure that he wanted to manage for the long run, but intended on living up to his three-year deal. One source went even further theorizing that Ventura was just keeping the seat warm until his bench coach, Mark Parent, took over.
Ventura's family life comes into play when he considers his near and far future. He was quite content living out in California when Kenny Williams and Jerry Reinsdorf approached him about taking over for Ozzie Guillen. Ventura was intrigued but was also torn about being away from his wife and children. Two of his daughters are off at college, but one daughter and a younger son still live at home.
Ever since Ventura retired he had been a home body, and managing the Sox was a radical change being apart from his family. He also has been with his wife for nearly 30 years dating back to their high school days, so that was a hard thing to deal with. His wife (Stephanie) did travel to Chicago and often came on road trips, but still being away was a hardship.
So, Ventura is still digesting what he wants to do with his future. He was truthful when he said this was absolutely not a negotiating ploy because he is as honest as the day is long. And it's not that Ventura might not consider adding a year or more to his current contract if the Sox are still offering. But for now, he will do as he stated and that's concentrate on the 2013 White Sox.
When the time comes, he'll deal with the future.
