Schuster: Hull & Mikita In Bronze Forever
By David Schuster-
(WSCR) Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita met over 50 years ago and have remained close all these years. And with the unveiling of their statues Saturday night they will remain side by side for eternity...in bronze.
Once again the Blackhawks did it right. The ceremony was perfect. The statues were perfect and even the weather complied and was perfect.
For those not old enough to remember, Hull and Mikita were absolute superstars of their day. They were the Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen of their era on ice. Hull was the flashy magnetic player who awed all who saw him while Mikita was the steady quiet star who was Hull's co-hort on and off the ice. Together they were dynamite and were the best 1-2 punch in the NHL.
Fast forward a half century and they still captivate the hockey world particularly here in Chicago. Both are now ambassadors for the Hawks and they bring smiles to the young Hawk fan base while also helping out the current players.
A crowd of over 1,000 people stayed out on Madison Street to witness the unveiling of the statues and you could feel the love for these two greats. Both made great speeches full of sentiment and humor and then it was time for the unveiling.
Hull's statue shows him cranking up a slap shot while Mikita's shows him handling the puck. Both are perfect replicas of how they looked on the ice.
So once again the Blackhawks do it right as their record remains almost perfect over the last few years.
