Schuster: Cubs Quiet So Far But Could Be Closing In On Deals

DALLAS (CBS) Are the Cubs closing in on some kind of deals?
General Manager Jed Hoyer indicated Tuesday that they are.
"We've been real busy talking to teams and agents," he said. "It's been really productive and hopefully that will lead to us getting some players before we leave these meetings."
Forget about Albert Pujols. That's not happening even though the Cubs did inquire. Pujols wants a long term deal with a no trade clause and the Cubs won't do either.
Pitching is where the Cubs are focusing their discussions and Hoyer admitted to such: "We have to add depth to our pitching staff and we've had a half dozen meetings to do just that. That has to be a priority with us because last year that was a struggle and it's a necessity that we address that."
But who?
C.J. Wilson has quickly found out that the market is not as lucrative for him as he thought. He wanted a six-year deal but wont get it. Then there is Mark Buehrle who is looking for a more palpable three- or four-year contract and the Cubs could be the sleeper team among five or six teams that are zeroing in on Buehrle's services. Buehrle said he would take his final offer back to the Sox to see if they would match, but Kenny Williams all but wished Buehrle luck in his future endeavors knowing that the Sox just don't have the funds .
The Cubs are keeping their discussions pretty close to the vest but they're confident that those discussions will bear fruit soon.
