Schuster: Cubs Lose Big (Again)
There they were, the Cubs, cruising along with a 6-3 5th inning lead probably thinking about how the cold beer would taste after the victory. The only problem was there wasn't any victory as the lowly Astros proceeded to run off 9 unanswered runs for a 12-6 win.
Rodrigo Lopez (who?) got the start and looked to be part of the storybook day but then quickly crashed back down to earth giving up back-to-back home runs in the 5th and so much for that.
Jeff Samardzija then came in and served up a gopher ball of his own in the 6th and the rout was on. Cub pitchers allowed 16 hits to the worst team in the National league and for good measure their porous defense allowed three more errors.
Through 52 games now the Cubs have yet to register a win streak past two and are much closer to last place then they are to first.
Adding injury to insult was Alfonso Soriano pulling a quad muscle running down to first base as he limped off the fields and very well could find himself on the already crowded disabled list.
