Schaumburg Cop Charged With Taking Gun Turned In For Disposal
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (CBS) -- The Schaumburg Police Department got another black eye on Thursday, after an officer was charged with taking a handgun that had been turned in to police for disposal.
WBBM Newsradio's Julie Mann reports Schaumburg Police Officer Bryan Woodyard, 38, turned himself in to his own department on charges of official misconduct.
It's the fourth time this year a Schaumburg police officer has found himself on the wrong side of the law. Earlier this year, three officers were arrested on drug charges.
According to Cook County prosecutors, two women had come to the Schaumburg police station in Paril to turn in a .22-caliber revolver. One of the women told Woodyard, who was at the front desk, that the gun had been in her home several years, but she was no longer comfortable having it in the house.
Prosecutors said Woodyard at first offered to buy the gun from the women, to add to his gun collection, but when they'd rather just turn it in to police, he took it and said he'd take care of it.
When one of the owners called days later to ask about the status of the gun, police found no record of it. It was later recovered from Woodyard's lunch bag.
Woodyard, a 7-year veteran, resigned earlier this week.
He appeared in court on Thursday and was released on bond. He's due back in court on June 18 in Rolling Meadows.
