Santos: Closer Title Is 'Insignificant'
CHICAGO (WSCR) Coming out of spring training, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen named Matt Thornton as the team's closer. But after Thornton struggled to close out ball games, the competition for that position opened back up, and it appears to have been claimed by Sergio Santos.
Despite having 12 of the team's 17 saves, Guillen has yet to officially name Santos the closer. And it doesn't appear as if that bothers the second-year reliever.
"It's a title," Santos said on The Score's Hit and Run. "Is it nice? Yeah, it'd be nice to have, but it's just a title. It's just something that's put on. If [Guillen] keeps bringing me in the ninth innings when we're up by three or less, then I know what my role is. And I'm fine with that, I don't need anymore. I don't need, you know, to be put down as 'hey, you're our closer, you're the guy.' To me. it's kind of insignificant, it's just more of, I hope the ball is in my hand when we're up by three, two or one. And that's what I look forward to."

In 31.2 innings this season, Santos has a 3.41 ERA. After blowing only his second save of the season on Friday night, Ozzie went right back to Santos on Sunday. Despite giving up two hits and a run, Santos picked up his 12th save of the season.
