Salvation Army Tutoring Program Helps Kids Reach College
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Besides feeding children's mouths, the Salvation Army also feeds their minds.
WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports the Salvation Army runs an after-school tutoring center at 1 N. Ogden Av. in the West Loop.

Officer Tyrone Staggers said the program began about 10 years ago.
"Our connection with tutoring happened as a result of our relationship with Rush University Medical School. They had first year students that would come in, and they would tutor our kids," he said.
Now, with help from the state, the program has expanded, and it turns out many success stories.
"We've had one kid graduate from University of Missouri. We have one at NIU that's now working for Enterprise. We have two at Eastern Illinois University; one will graduate in May," Staggers said.
Besides helping students with their studies, Staggers said the program also provides them with a hot meal every afternoon, and works on life skills to help them become productive adults.
