LIBERTYVILLE, Ill. (CBS) -- The Salvation Army has literally struck gold with several anonymous donors in the northern suburbs.
As WBBM Newsradio's John Waelti reports, within a span of three days last week, the Salvation Army received 10 gold coins from anonymous donors in Lake County alone, worth a total of $4,680, the Lake County News-Sun reported.

Among them were seven gold Swiss francs, each worth $2,400, dropped in a red kettle outside the Red Top Jewel store in Libertyville last Thursday.
Mundelein, Gurnee and Round Lake Beach also saw gold coin donations, the newspaper reported.
One-ounce Canadian Maple Leaf gold coins worth $190 apiece were dropped in kettles outside the Hobby Lobby in Mundelein and the Hunt Club Jewel in Gurnee, and an American Double Eagle gold coin was dropped in a kettle outside the Round Lake Beach Wal-Mart, the News-Sun reported.
The anticipation of gold coins has become something of a tradition, after the first such coin was left in a McHenry County kettle 25 years ago, the News-Sun reported.
Since then, the Salvation Army has received more than 400 gold coins, all from anonymous donors.
