The theft of equipment owned by the Salvation Army Oakbrook Terrace Corps happened Saturday outside the Jewel store at 140 Lake St. in Addison, Pioneer Press is reporting.
Thieves made off with the kettle, stand and a Salvation Army sign valued at $750.
"We have two stands and bell ringers outside the Jewel's doors," Sue Linden of the Oakbrook Terrace Salvation Army said. "Our bell ringers went on break and the stand, sign and bucket were stolen around 2 p.m."
Linden said thefts of the kettles are rare, but said someone tried to steal one last year in Lombard.
"The bell ringer saw it happening and made a lot of noise," she said. "They couldn't get it in their truck and left without it."
She believes there could have been, "a couple hundred dollars," inside the kettle when it was stolen.
"We'd like to have it back or at least recoup the cost to have it replaced," she said. "It's a tough thing to happen to us during this time. It really makes things difficult."
Anyone with information should call Addison police at (630) 543-3080.
