Sale Needs To Be Effective For White Sox
One of the biggest stories for the Chicago White Sox during spring training has been the battle for the closer role. The perception is that it will come down to with Chris Sale or Matt Thornton.
But even if Sale isn't named the team's closer, it's vitally important to the White Sox for him to at least be effective as the team's second best left hander out of the Bullpen.
"[The media] thought this guy was a slam dunk based on his body of work, which was two months in the big leagues and a very impressive two months," Mark Gonzales, of the Chicago Tribune said on the Mully and Hanley Show when talking about Sale.
In his rookie season, Sale pitched 23.1 innings and had 32 strikeouts, a 1.07 WHIP, 1.93 ERA and converted in all four of his save opportunities.
"But they need him, because if he can't do that role adequately then you're going to ask Will Ohman to be the number two lefty, when he's always had trouble getting out righties," Gonzales said. "That's a curious situation, especially when you want to not burn these guys out, but save them for lefties. Because we all know about the Mauers, the Morneaus, the Kubels, the Choos, they're going to face these guys 19 times each. So it's important for these guys to be effective in their specific roles."
