Ryne Sandberg Rejoins Cubs As An Ambassador
(CBS) Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg has rejoined the Cubs organization as an ambassador, as first reported by 670 The Score's Bruce Levine.
Sandberg's exact duties haven't been explained yet, though more will probably be revealed when he appears at the Cubs Convention this weekend.
Sandberg had an illustrious 16-year MLB career, the last 15 of which were spent with the Cubs. He was a 10-time All-Star, nine-time Gold Glove winner and the 1984 MVP. Sandberg finished with 2,386 career hits and 282 homers.
He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2005.
Sandberg managed the Phillies across parts of three seasons from 2013-'15, amassing a 119-159 record. He resigned in June 2015, saying the lack of success "took a toll on me."
The Cubs passed on hiring Sandberg as manager in 2010 after he spent four years managing in their minor league system, including a stint at the Triple-A Iowa Cubs' skipper. He then left the Cubs organization to be a minor league manager for the Phillies. He was Philadelphia's bench coach in 2013 before replacing manager Charlie Manuel that August.
