Roselle Seeks Residents' Help To Pay For Next Year's Fireworks

ROSELLE, Ill. (CBS) -- One northwest suburb is hoping residents will pay out of their own pockets for next year's July 4th fireworks display.

Roselle hopes to collect $25,000 for next year's fireworks, and has launched a fundraising campaign called "Get A Bang For Your Buck."

Village President Gayle Smolinski says they had to cancel this year's Independence Day display because of a budget shortfall.

Roselle had cancelled the fireworks in 2010 and 2011 also, but some business and community groups stepped up to foot the bill.

But they could not afford to do it again, Smolinski says.

The campaign's first goal is to raise $15,000 by mid-March.

If it fails, the 2013 display will be cancelled, and donations will be put into a fund for the following year's fireworks.
