Rookies Lead Rays To 7-5 Win Over White Sox
PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Joey Butler had three of Tampa Bay's 14 hits and Matt Andriese earned his first major league win Friday night in the Rays' 7-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox.
Andriese (1-1) gave up two runs -- both unearned -- in a career-high 5 2-3 innings. He struck out five in the 26th game started by a Rays rookie this season.
Butler, another rookie who has hit safely in 12 of 13 games, drove in two runs with singles.
Hits by Mikie Mahtook, Brandon Guyer and Butler gave the Rays a 2-0 lead in the first inning against starter John Danks and they led all the way, ending Chicago's three-game win streak.
Jake McGee pitched the ninth for his second save.
Steven Souza Jr., Jake Elmore, Nick Franklin and Kevin Kiermaier had two hits each for the Rays.
Jose Abreu hit his 12th home run for the White Sox, connecting in a third straight game for the first time in his career.
Danks (3-6) gave up five runs (three earned) and eight hits in 5 1-3 innings. He is 1-5 with a 5.71 ERA in his last seven starts against the Rays after going 5-1 with a 2.35 in his first six starts against Tampa Bay.
Coming in, both teams had gone seven games without scoring five runs.
Bench coach Mark Parent managed the White Sox in the absence of Robin Ventura, who is attending his daughter's graduation this weekend.
