Roof Of Suburban Burger King Collapses During Fire
BERWYN, Ill. (STMW) -- A fire collapsed the roof of a west suburban Burger King restaurant Wednesday morning.
The manager of the fast-food restaurant at 3441 S. Harlem Av. in Berwyn called 911 a few minutes after 8 a.m. to report smoke coming from the ceiling, Berwyn fire Chief Denis O'Halloran said.
Crews started fighting the blaze inside the restaurant, but were overcome by heat and smoke, and forced to move outside, O'Halloran said.
The fire was extinguished at 10:15 a.m., O'Halloran said. The three employees who were inside when the blaze began were safely evacuated. No one was injured.
Harlem Avenue was closed in both directions between Ogden and Stanley during the fire, O'Halloran said.
There was significant damage to the building, mostly to the roof, which collapsed into the building, O'Halloran said.
Firefighters were still on the scene Wednesday morning investigating the cause of the blaze and mopping up hot spots.
