Roland Burris Coy On Campaign For Mayor

CHICAGO (WBBM) -- Outgoing U.S. Sen. Roland Burris' supporters entered his name into the race for mayor of Chicago yesterday, but Burris tells Newsradio 780 he's still deciding whether to run.

"We'll get into that,'' said Burris, who was appointed by former Gov. Rod Blagojevich to finish President Obama's Senate term. "Let me get back to you because ... I'm working with my people right now trying to figure out what these people are trying to do. I'll get back to you. You'll hear from me in the very near future."

Burris was asked what he thought about the draft-Burris-for-mayor campaign.

"What did I say?" Burris asked. "I said I'll get back to you."

And, why not talk about it now?

"Because I'm not prepared," he said. "I've got to deal with the situation. God bless you."

Insiders say money will be a real issue because Burris is $800,000 in debt for legal bills.

An aide tells Newsradio 780 that Burris has been aware of the movement to draft him for mayor for awhile.

The aide says Burris left Washington last Friday and is expected to step down as senator on Nov. 29, when Mark Kirk is sworn in.
