Rogers Park Teen Charged With Attempted Murder
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 17-year-old Rogers Park boy was charged as an adult with attempted murder for allegedly shooting at police officers early Saturday in the North Side Uptown neighborhood.
Jansen Aikens, of the 1300 block of West Chase Avenue, was charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the alleged shootout near Broadway and Sunnyside Avenue, according to police News Affairs.
Shots were fired at and by police officers during the incident, which happened about 12:20 a.m., police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said.
No officers were hurt and no one was shot, but one person was taken into custody, Greer said.
Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said the officers, in a squad car, recognized one of three men walking down the street as someone wanted for questioning in connection with a separate case. But when they tried to stop him for questioning, the men took off running.
One of the other men with him allegedly turned back toward the squad car with a gun and started shooting at police in what Camden described as a "combat position" -- crouching, with both hands gripping the weapon.
He allegedly fired at least five shots, and gave himself up when the weapon ran out of ammunition, Camden said. Several of the gunshots hit the police vehicle and at least one pierced the front windshield while the officers were inside.
"That's pretty scary stuff," Camden said of the incident.
The man was arrested and a weapon was recovered at the scene, said Camden. The other two men escaped arrest, and authorities could not immediately say why police initially wanted to stop one of the men for questioning.
Aikens, 17, was ordered held on $1 million bond and will next appear in court Nov. 2 at Br. 66, at 2600 S. California Ave., according to the Cook County Sheriff's office.
