Rock's Rant: Obama Overkill In The Sports Arena Must Stop

How much is too much?

A Chicago Suntimes exclusive today revealed that President Obama's current Secretary of Education (and former head of Chicago Public Schools) Arne Duncan recommended current Chicago Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau to Jerry Reinsdorf when the Bulls were searching for a new head coach before the 2008-2009 season.  Of course we all know that the Bulls went on to hire Vinny Del Negro with two seasons of .500 basketball to come before dropping Vinny for Coach Thibs.

While we can all wonder what this Bulls team would have been like if they did wait for the Boston Celtics to finish their championship season that year so they can at least speak of Thibodeau, what bothers me more is the amount of stories that come out about the White House being involved in sports.

While I have no problem with the White House celebrating the champions of respective sports (Blackhawks visit on Friday), the emphasis the White House has of showing that President Obama is a "normal guy" who likes sports is a little overkill.  I voted for President Obama like many other Americans, but I elected him to not be the "normal guy" who likes sports.

I elected President Obama to face the pitiful economic situation our country was in, not participate in a three part series on ESPN about his bracketology.  I support President Obama in his crusade to bring national healthcare to this country, not attend Washington Wizards games for good pub and PR.  When he should be addressing world leaders about crippling gas prices in the United States, I read today that the White House suggested Tom Thibodeau for the Bulls head coaching vacancy two seasons ago.

The President and the White House which everyone who works under him should know that less is more.  Less sitting in with CBS television during a college basketball game and laughing it up about Georgetown hoops.  Do we really need TNT headed to the White House to see Obama's mid range jump shot?  Next time President Obama throws out a first pitch at a baseball game, can he at least remember one of his favorite Chicago White Sox players when asked about it.

Memo to President Barack Obama:
Love your passion for sports and Chicago, but I wanna read more about the progress for America than who you have in your Final Four.
