Man charged in deadly shooting, stabbing on same block on Chicago's Southwest Side
A man was charged Wednesday in a deadly shooting and stabbing that happened Sunday minutes apart on the same block in Chicago's Gage Park neighborhood.
Robert Romo, 57, faces two felony counts of first-degree murder, one felony count of attempted first-degree murder, and one felony count of aggravated battery.
Romo was supposed to appear in court for a detention hearing Wednesday, but it was rescheduled for next week after he had a stroke and remains hospitalized.
During the hearing, prosecutors described the series of events they believe led to the murders.
According to prosecutors, Romo shot and stabbed his brother, Richard Romo, 63, and his brother's wife, Rita Chavez, 64, inside their apartment in the 5300 block of South Kedzie Avenue.
Prosecutors said Richard called 911 asking for help for his wife.
Moments later, prosecutors said Robert Romo continued his rampage at "Just One More" sports bar at 5332 S. Kedzie Ave., where he threatened the bouncer and then went in with his gun and knife.
"He started like trying to like rush inside the bar, and the people just started going all crazy, and they're like: 'He's got a gun! He's got a knife!'" said a witness, TJ.
Police said Romo followed and attacked a 44-year-old woman int he bathroom, stabbing her multiple times. Sources said police at the bar arrived, used a Taser on Romo, and took him into custody.
While Romo's brother and sister-in-law did not survive, the woman he attacked inside the bar is expected to recover from her injuries. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital for treatment.
In addition to the charges in the rampage this past weekend, Romo also has a pending case for drug related charges.
A judge on Wednesday said even though Romo is in the hospital, he is to remain detained. Depending on his condition, a hearing is set for Monday.
