Robbery Suspect Rams Police Car During Chase
ELGIN (STMW) -- A northwest suburban Huntley man was taken into custody Saturday morning in Elgin after leading police on a chase through two suburbs following a bank robbery.
A 29-year-old Huntley man entered the Harris Bank branch at 12920 Illinois Route 47 about 11 a.m. and approached a teller with a shotgun and demanded money, according to a release from Huntley police.
The teller gave the man an undisclosed amount of cash and he fled in a white Ford Tempo, Huntley police said.
Huntley police got a description of the suspect and vehicle and found him driving the car on Route 47 near Powers Road, Huntley police said. The suspect did not stop, and Huntley police pursued the vehicle into Elgin.
The car was damaged when the man drove over a curb in Elgin, and it eventually came to rest at the bottom of a grassy hill, Huntley police said.
Elgin police learned of the armed robbery through the Illinois State Police Radio Network and also gave pursuit, according to an Elgin police release.
At some point, the Tempo intentionally hit an Elgin police car head-on, Elgin police said. That police car spun around and hit another police car, but no one was hurt.
The man exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, but was apprehended and taken into custody, Huntley police said.
Officers recovered a weapon and proceeds of a robbery at the scene, Elgin police spokeswoman Sue Olafson said.
Elgin police arrested him, and he was taken to the Huntley police station.
The FBI is also investigating.
