Woman's Neck Slashed By Girl, 14, On West Side
UPDATED 12/22/11 10:59 a.m.
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 20-year-old woman is shaken, but recovering, after a robbery that left her with a scar on her neck.
As CBS 2's Susanna Song reports, the woman, who goes by the name Cindy and did not want her face on camera, said on Thursday morning that she was tired, and just happy to be back home with her 6-month-old son and husband.
Cindy ended up injured Wednesday night because two teenage girls took advantage of her kindness.
Around 9:10 p.m., she was walking to her car near the Green Line 'L' stop at Cicero Avenue, when the two girls asked her for a ride. One was just 14 years old.
Cindy said she agreed to drive the girls only as far as she lived – Washington Boulevard and Lamon Avenue.
"One of the females that was sitting behind me – she took out a knife and put it to my throat and demanded that I keep on driving," Cindy said. "She tried to, like, stab me in the face. I saw the knife, like, coming toward my eye. But I moved, and she got, like, this part of my neck up to my ear."
At that point, Cindy jumped out of her car. The girls then tried to get away, but only one was successful.
Cindy chased the girls down, and one – the 14-year-old – was arrested.
What made Cindy give the girls a ride in the first place?
"I don't know. I really don't know," she said, "when you see young girls outside, like, walking in the middle of the night – not in the middle of the night, but late to be out in this neighborhood."
Cindy said the girls told her they had been kicked out of their home and wanted to go to their cousin's house.
She said looking back, she thought she was going to die.
"I was thinking about my son, like, 'This is crazy.' I was tired I just came out of work. It's going to be Christmas," she said.
She also was shocked by the brazen violence committed by a girl so young.
"You're 14. What are you doing? You're supposed to be at home, I don't know, going to school the next day, maybe. What are you doing with a knife trying to rob people," Cindy said. "I was just saying, what if it didn't go the way the planned? What if it had been different? You don't think about stuff like that."
But Cindy herself has very much thought about what would have happened if the knife had gone in deeper.
"I do, and thank God – He had my back," she said.
The 14-year-old girl is charged with armed robbery and aggravated battery. Police continue to search for the other girl, whom Cindy believes is between 16 and 19 years old.
