As WBBM Newsradio 780's Dave Dahl reports, non-emergency projects are suspended through midnight Monday night.
"With less construction and heavy equipment in use this weekend, everything from traffic congestion being reduced to safety and traffic flow improving, is definitely a vital asset to this operation," said Illinois Department of Transportation spokesman Josh Kauffman.
But Kauffman warns that speed limits still apply, even in work zones where no one is working.
IDOT has similarly suspended work for the July 4 holiday in the past few years.
