Riverside Crossing Guard Struck In Hit-And-Run
RIVERSIDE, Ill. (STMW) - Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver that struck a crossing guard Thursday in west suburban Riverside.
The crossing guard was struck by a vehicle at 3:50 p.m. at the intersection of Longcommon and Nuttall roads, according to a release from Riverside Police.
The crossing guard was helping two children cross the street with his back facing east when a vehicle struck him from behind causing him to be thrown to the ground, according to the release.
The children that were walking in the crosswalk were not harmed.
L.J. Hauser Junior High School, Central and St. Mary elementary schools are near the location, according to an online search.
The driver of the vehicle, an elderly man with gray hair, stopped momentarily and exchanged words, according to the release. The driver then left the area towards the railroad crossing, which is located near the intersection of Riverside Road and Pine Avenue, according to an online search.
The vehicle was red and possibly a Ford Focus, according to the release. The vehicle's registration was not observed.
The crossing guard, who worked for the village for 20 years, was treated for minor injuries and released from Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.
