Richton Park And Park Forest Police Involved In Fatal Shooting

(CBS) -- Police were involved in a shooting today following a reported armed robbery in Richton Park.

UPDATE 6:00 PM:

A man was shot in the head in the 400 block of Suwanee Street around 2 p.m. Monday, according to the Park Forest Police Department.

Officers say the man was seriously injured, but able to talk. The victim was transported to Christ Hospital with life-threatening injuries. A responding officer located a man matching the description of the suspect walking a short distance away in Richton Park.

The suspect continued to disobey police commands and continued to run away from the officers. One officer produced a handgun and an exchange of gunfire ensued as the man ran westbound.  The exchange of gunfire lasted for about one block, ending with the suspect getting shot.

Officers performed CPR on the suspect until paramedics arrived on the scene. The man was later pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released.

The suspect's gun was recovered at the scene.

According to the Park Forest Police Department, a total of three Park Forest officers and one Richton Park officer were directly involved in the exchange of gunfire. All of the officers will be placed on administrative leave while the incident is under investigation.

5:00 PM

Police were involved in a shooting today following a reported armed robbery in Richton Park.

The shooting happened at 22507 Richton Square Road.

There is a large police presence at the location.

Authorities say there is no threat to the community.

Richton Park police say they will have more information later.
