Retired Bishop Timothy Lyne, 94, Dies
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Retired Auxiliary Bishop Timothy Lyne has died at the age of 94.
According to the Archdiocese of Chicago, Lyne died Wednesday morning in his residence at Holy Name Cathedral.
Lyne was a Chicago native and was ordained a priest in 1943.
He was the longtime pastor at Holy Name Cathedral, serving in that position from 1967 to 1990.
"I have been fortunate to have known six cardinals," Lyne said in an interview this summer with Catholic New World. Each one was a fascinating person who influenced me and my life in a way for which I will always be grateful. Cardinal Mundelein; Cardinal Stritch, who ordained me; Cardinal Meyer; Cardinal Cody, who appointed me to the cathedral; Cardinal Bernardin, under whom I became an auxiliary bishop; and Cardinal George, who has graced the last 16 years of my priesthood."
According to that interview, Lyne loved to golf and routinely attended the Lyric Opera.
While Lyne officially retired in 1995, he remained the vicar for senior priests. He was raised on the West Side and was a son of a police officer.
Most Rev. Timothy J. Lyne, D.D., 94, Retired Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago and Rector of Holy Name Cathedral, passed away suddenly this morning at his residence in the Bishop Lyne Rectory at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago.
Visitation for Bishop Lyne will take place on Sunday, Sept. 29, from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. and Monday, Sept. 30 from 9 a.m. until 10:15 a.m., at Holy Name Cathedral, State and Superior Streets in Chicago.
Francis Cardinal George, OMI, Archbishop of Chicago, will be the main celebrant at the funeral Mass for Bishop Lyne on Monday, Sept. 30, at 10:30 a.m., at Holy Name Cathedral. Most. Rev. Francis Kane, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago and Archdiocesan Vicar General, will be the homilist.
Interment will be at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Hillside.
