Reputed Mobster Michael Sarno's Trial Delayed
Suspect Is Charged With Blowing Up Video Gaming Offices
CHICAGO (CBS) - The trial of a reputed mobster accused of orchestrating the bombing of a video gaming company's offices has been delayed for a few days.
The trial for Michael "The Large Guy" Sarno, 52, was set to begin in U.S. District Court Monday. But Judge Ronald Guzman put it off until Wednesday because the wife of one attorney just had a baby.
Prosecutors accuse Sarno of ordering co-defendants to bomb the Berwyn offices of C&S Coin Operated Amusements in 2003. The bombing destroyed the offices.
The company distributed video-poker equipment that authorities say was used for gambling.
Sarno and six other men -- including police officers from both Cicero and Berwyn -- were allegedly involved in a criminal enterprise since at least 2001. The crimes included at least nine armed robberies and thefts from jewelry stores, others businesses and homes in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. The charges also include allegations of arson, engaging in illegal gambling activity and obstruction of justice.
In April, the former Berwyn police officer, James Fornato, pleaded guilty to his role in the criminal operation. The others have all pleaded not guilty.
